Restore what’s missing with care

Dental Bridges Scotland to Restore Your Smile

What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a custom-made dental treatment that replaces a missing tooth, or several, by anchoring a pontic (false tooth) to the teeth on either side of the gap. This type of restoration helps restore your smile, improve chewing and speech, and maintain the health of your teeth and gums. There are several types of bridges, each suited to different situations depending on how many teeth are missing and where the gap is located.

Benefits of a Dental Bridge

  • Fills the side of the gap caused by tooth loss
  • Prevents surrounding teeth from drifting out of place
  • Supports facial structure and balance
  • Restores clear speech and bite function
  • A fixed dental bridgework solution, no need for removable dentures

Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional Bridge

The most common type of bridge, a traditional dental bridge uses dental crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap, called abutment teeth. These are to support the pontic in between. These are typically made from porcelain fused to metal or ceramic and are strong enough for back molars.

Cantilever Bridge

A cantilever dental bridge is used when only one abutment tooth is available to support the bridge. This type of dental bridge is less common and best suited to areas of the mouth under lower bite pressure.

Maryland Bonded (Resin-Bonded Bridge)

Also called a resin bonded bridge, this option involves attaching metal wings or ceramic extensions to the back of the existing teeth adjacent to the gap. This is often used for front teeth, where minimal preparation is preferred.

The Dental Bridge Procedure

  1. Preparing the Abutment Teeth During your first visit, we carefully shape the abutment teeth to accommodate dental crowns, which will later support the bridge. We then take detailed impressions of your teeth to send to our dental technician. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the area while your fixed dental bridgework is custom-crafted.
  2. Fitting the Bridge At your second appointment, we remove the temporary bridge and check how your new dental bridge fits. Once you and your dentist are happy with the result, we permanently cement the bridge in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do dental bridges last?

With good hygiene and regular dental visits, a fixed bridge can last 10–15 years or longer.

Do all bridges require crowns on surrounding teeth?

Not always. While traditional dental bridges do, Maryland bonded bridges attach using metal wings and require minimal alteration of your existing teeth.

Is a dental bridge better than an implant?

Both are excellent treatment options. A dental bridge may be preferred if the surrounding teeth already need crowns or if implants aren’t suitable for health reasons.

How do I clean around a dental bridge?

We’ll show you how to floss under the pontic and clean around the abutment teeth to keep the bridge and teeth healthy.
