Deep calm for anxious patients

Intravenous Sedation for Nervous Patients in Scotland

A Calmer Way to Receive Dental Treatment

Intravenous sedation is a safe and effective type of sedation that helps nervous patients relax during their dental treatment. Many patients avoid visiting the dentist due to dental anxiety or dental phobia, even when they need help.

At Dental Studio Scotland, we offer conscious sedation to create a deeply relaxed state without putting you to sleep. This allows you to undergo even complex dental procedures comfortably, while remaining aware and responsive.

Please note this service is only available privately at our Kilmarnock location.

What Is Intravenous Sedation?

With IV sedation, we administer a sedative drug directly into your bloodstream through a small cannula placed in your hand or arm. This fast-acting medication helps you feel calm and at ease, without needing general anesthesia or being fully unconscious.

You won’t fall asleep, but you may not remember much of the procedure. Most patients report feeling like time passed quickly and stress-free.

Who Is It For?

IV sedation is ideal for:

  • Patients with dental phobia or severe dental anxiety
  • Anyone undergoing long or complex dental treatment
  • People with a strong gag reflex
  • Patients who avoid or delay dental appointments

Those who have trouble staying still in the dental chair

How It Works

  • We insert a small tube into a vein in your arm or hand
  • The sedative drug (usually Midazolam) flows directly into your bloodstream
  • Within minutes, you’ll feel calm, detached, and fully relaxed
  • Your dentist will still apply local anaesthetic, but only after you’re sedated
  • Throughout the procedure, we monitor your oxygen levels, blood pressure, and pulse

After Your Appointment

Because this is a deeper level of sedation, recovery takes time. After your appointment:

  • A family member or friend must take you home
  • You must rest for at least 24 hours
  • No driving, alcohol, or using machinery
  • Most side effects are minor: drowsiness, nausea, or memory gaps

If any symptoms persist beyond 24 hours, contact the clinic.

You won’t be discharged until you’re fully awake and able to walk unaided.

Is IV sedation

IV sedation is a routine, well-established technique used across the UK, the United States, and globally. It is very safe when administered by trained clinicians, like those at our dental practice.

We’ll evaluate your medical history before treatment.

Sedation may not be suitable if you’re pregnant, have certain medical conditions, or allergies. It’s also important to inform us if you are receiving NHS dental treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be unconscious during IV sedation?

No. This is a conscious sedation method. You’ll be deeply relaxed but aware and able to respond.

Will I feel pain?

No. We use local anaesthetic to block pain after you’re sedated, so you won’t feel discomfort.

Can I return to work the same day?

No. You’ll need rest, supervision, and should not work or drive for 24 hours.

How does this compare to oral sedation or laughing gas?

Oral sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) are milder levels of sedation. Intravenous sedation offers deeper relaxation for patients with higher anxiety.
