Light sedation for dental anxiety

Inhalation Sedation (Happy Gas) for Nervous Patients in Scotland

Feel Calm and in Control During Dental Treatment

For many patients, visiting the dentist can trigger dental anxiety, or even full dental phobia. If you feel anxious, overwhelmed, or have avoided care due to fear, we are able to help. At Dental Studio Scotland, we offer safe and effective sedation techniques to help you receive the dental care you need, comfortably and without fear.

One of our most accessible options is inhalation sedation, also known as happy gas or laughing gas.

What Is Inhalation Sedation?

Inhalation sedation is a form of conscious sedation where you breathe a controlled mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a soft nosepiece. Within minutes, you’ll feel relaxed and calm. You remain awake and aware but less sensitive to sounds, smells, or sensations.

It’s ideal for:

  • Nervous patients or those with dental anxiety
  • Patients fearful of the dentist
  • Children or first-time visitors
  • Anyone struggling to cope with routine dental procedures

This is not general anaesthetic, you won’t fall asleep, and there’s no loss of consciousness.

How inhalation sedation Works

  • You’ll be asked to eat a light meal a few hours before your dental appointment
  • A nosepiece delivers the sedative drug (nitrous oxide and oxygen)
  • You’ll feel calm and slightly floaty within minutes
  • You’ll still receive a local anaesthetic (if required), but only after the sedation has taken effect
  • We continuously monitor your blood pressure and breathing throughout
  • The effects of laughing gas wear off very quickly once the mask is removed

What Are the Benefits?

  • Reduces anxiety during treatment
  • Helps anxious patients remain calm and co-operative
  • Safe for both adults and children
  • No needle required to deliver sedation
  • Minimal recovery time, you can usually resume daily activities shortly after

Is Inhalation Sedation It Safe?

Inhalation sedation is one of the most established and safe and effective sedation techniques used in modern dentistry worldwide. It’s considered the lightest form of conscious sedation, with a very low risk of side effects when administered correctly.

It’s also a great alternative to intravenous sedation for patients who don’t want an injection or who are undergoing shorter, less complex dental procedures.

Side Effects and Aftercare

Most patients feel normal again within minutes. You’ll be assessed before leaving to ensure you can walk unaided

Rare side effects may include mild nausea or dizziness, if this happens, rest and hydrate. In extremely rare cases, patients may report a headache or brief disorientation

If you experience unusual symptoms after 24 hours, contact your dental practice immediately. In most cases, you won’t need someone to escort you home, but it’s best to confirm in advance based on your overall health and response.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I still need an injection?

If your treatment requires numbing, we’ll use a local anaesthetic—but only after you’re relaxed from the laughing gas. Most patients report not caring or noticing once sedated.

Will I remember the procedure?

Yes, you’ll stay awake, but many patients feel detached from the experience. Some have hazy or minimal memory of the appointment.

Can I use this for every visit?

Yes. If you’re a nervous patient, we can incorporate inhalation sedation into your treatment plan to help you build confidence and receive regular care.

Is it safe for children or older adults?

Absolutely. With proper monitoring, inhalation sedation is suitable for patients of all ages, including children, teens, and seniors.
