A Long-Lasting, Tooth-Conserving Solution for Rear Teeth

Inlays and Onlays at Dental Studio Scotland

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are custom dental restorations used to repair rear teeth that have been damaged by tooth decay, fractures, or large failing dental fillings. These restorations are ideal when the damage is too extensive for a simple filling, but not severe enough to require full dental crowns. This type of dental restoration helps preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible while strengthening what remains.

At Dental Studio Scotland, we use materials such as porcelain, composite resin, or porcelain fused to metal to restore function and aesthetics with a seamless finish.

  • Inlays fit inside the cusps (top edges) of the tooth
  • Onlays cover one or more cusps, sometimes extending over part of the tooth

These high-strength restorations are custom-made in a lab and bonded into place, offering long-term results and a natural look.

When Are Inlays or Onlays Needed?

Inlays and onlays are often recommended when:

  • You have a damaged tooth that can’t be treated with a basic filling
  • Your existing dental filling has failed or worn out
  • You want a more conservative option than a crown
  • You’re replacing metal fillings with a natural-looking solution
  • You’re experiencing issues with chipped teeth, cracked teeth, or old dental restorations

Unlike full dental crowns, inlays and onlays preserve more of the healthy tooth enamel, helping you maintain strength and appearance over time.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

  • Conserves Natural Tooth Structure: Inlays/onlays restore only the part of the tooth that’s damaged, preserving as much of your healthy tooth enamel as possible.
  • Strength and Durability: These restorations can last up to 20 years and strengthen the tooth by up to 75%, more than many traditional dental fillings.
  • Natural Appearance: When made from composite resin or porcelain, inlays and onlays blend seamlessly with your natural teeth for a discreet finish.
  • Less Invasive than Crowns: Unlike dental crowns, inlays and onlays require less preparation of the prepared tooth, making the procedure more conservative.
  • Improved Oral Function: By restoring the structure and bite of the tooth, they improve chewing and protect against further damage.

The Inlay and Onlay Procedure

During your first visit, your dentist will numb the area and gently remove any decayed or damaged part of the tooth. Once the tooth is clean and prepared, an impression is taken using either dental putty or a digital scanner to ensure an accurate fit. A temporary filling may be placed to protect the tooth while your custom inlay or onlay is being created. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory, where your restoration will be crafted from porcelain, composite resin, or gold.

At your second appointment, the temporary filling is carefully removed. Your dentist will then check the inlay or onlay for an accurate fit and ensure it feels comfortable in your bite. Once approved, the restoration is permanently bonded to the prepared tooth using a high-strength dental resin. Finally, the inlay or onlay is polished to deliver a smooth, natural-looking finish.

This two-step process is highly precise and offers a custom-fit solution that restores both the strength and appearance of your tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are inlays and onlays better than traditional fillings?

Yes, in many cases. They’re stronger, last longer, and provide a better seal—especially for larger cavities or rear teeth.

Is this treatment painful?

No. The area is numbed during the procedure, and most patients experience minimal discomfort.

What materials are used?

We offer composite resin, porcelain, and porcelain fused to metal—all of which are durable and can be colour-matched to your natural teeth.

Can inlays and onlays replace old fillings?

Absolutely. They’re commonly used when old dental fillings need to be replaced or upgraded.

How do inlays/onlays compare to dental bridges or implants?

They serve a different purpose. Inlays and onlays restore existing teeth. Dental bridges and dental implants replace missing teeth entirely.
