A Brighter, Healthier Smile Starts with a Deep Dental Clean

Scale and Polish Dental Hygiene Treatments in Scotland

What is Scale and Polish?

Scale and polish, also known as scale and clean or dental cleaning, is a professional dental hygiene procedure that removes plaque, tartar, and surface stains caused by foods and drinks, smoking, and poor brushing. This treatment goes beyond regular cleaning your teeth at home by providing a deep clean that targets the build-up of plaque and bacteria below the gumline.

By reducing the build up of plaque, scale and polish treatments help prevent bad breath, bleeding gums, periodontitis, and even reduce the risk of systemic conditions like heart disease. It’s a cornerstone of effective oral hygiene practice.

Scale and Polish Treatment Process

Your hygienist will perform a two-part dental treatment:

  • Scaling: Using ultrasonic and hand tools, we remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from both above and below the gumline (also known as scaling and root planing if deeper cleaning is required).
  • Polishing: The teeth are then polished to remove surface stains and smooth the enamel. We may include air polishing for enhanced stain removal and brightness.

You’ll also receive advice on brushing technique, how to clean between your teeth, and using fluoride toothpaste to strengthen enamel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between scale and polish and a regular clean?

A scale and polish offers a deep clean that removes hardened plaque and tartar below the gumline, which a regular home routine can’t reach.

How often should I get a scale and polish?

Most patients benefit from a dental clean every 6 months, but people with gum disease or risk of periodontitis may need it more frequently.

Does scale and polish hurt?

The treatment is usually pain-free, but we can offer numbing options for sensitive patients or advanced gum concerns.

Can scale and polish help with bad breath?

Yes. By removing bacteria and plaque, this treatment is highly effective in tackling bad breath and restoring a clean, fresh feeling.
